About

Artist's Statement:

"Ever hunting for interesting things to ponder and learn about, new work begins with the planning of a project. I select a subject as a starting point, create some rules for the task and then this allows me to set out on a journey through information sources of all kinds.

This way of working seems a natural progression from my background as a journalist but has some differences. I try to convey something of my own direct experience, as a journalist might, but I can also allow myself to be taken on tangents, whether literal or imaginary and move away from purely factual exploration.

During written research stages I’m left with images which stay with me and which combine and reform, encompassing aspects of my subject as well as something new. Photography, drawing and painting, and also the exploration of materials and structures, are used as ways of learning, thinking and wondering.

At the beginning of the process, there's no visible ending - it dictates its own direction and I respond to what I find along the way. The subject provides merely a starting point and takes second place to the expedition.

Using this method, I aim to examine broader issues through small beginnings and to consider how the seemingly small and local links and contributes to the wider world. Each project can end in written, painted or sometimes temporary format, with its only aim being to give another viewer something to ponder for themselves."
